Quiet day's trading
ends Brightwells' year

A hugely eventful year of bloodstock auctions in Europe finished on a very quiet note at Ascot yesterday with the December Sale, where neither the average or median hit four figures and two lots topped trade with a price tag of just £5,000.

Zhukov, who showed solid form in bumpers for Robbie Osborne in Ireland, was one of the sale toppers and he will join Kahlil Burke's stable near Swansea after being bought by Mike Deren of Gold Bloodstock.

"We've got a number of horses with Kahlil and we'll let him have a look at this fellow and we'll leave it to the trainer to decide what to do with him," said Deren.

The four-time point-to-point winner Dad Says Heazle, who was previously trained by Jimmy Frost, will carry on racing between the flags. He was unsold at £4,500 in the ring but was subsequently bought privately for £5,000 by Kent-based Jenny Donegan, a stalwart of the south-eastern point-to-pointing scene.

Ascot's sales have proved a good shopping ground for those looking for prospects for other equine disciplines and a new career beckons for Sheeian Rock, who showed modest form in three starts for Henrietta Knight and was sold for £4,100 to David Phelan. The four-year-old is set to join top eventer William Fox-Pitt.

Meanwhile Danesman, who finished second in a Huntingdon juvenile event to the useful Walkon on his only hurdling start for Gary Moore, was bought for £4,000 by Brecon-based Don Gould. "He is a nice-looking horse and is going to Dai Burchell," said Gould.

Yesterday's £74,500 aggregate, achieved in just three and a half hours of trading, made a small contribution towards the £2,367,550 annual turnover at Ascot this year, which fell 3 per cent short of last year's figures.

But with 1,083 horses sold in 2008, at an impressive clearance rate of 80 per cent, it was the first time since 1994 that Ascot had seen more than 1,000 horses sold in a year.
