Tapit holds strong hand in Kentucky Oaks

GAINESWAY FARM stallion Tapit holds a strong chance of enhancing his already fine record with female progeny by providing the winner of tonight's Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.

Tapit is sire of two of the race favourites: Joyful Victory, winner of her last two starts, the Fantasy and Honeybee Stakes by an aggregate 15¾ lengths, and Zazu, runner-up in the Santa Anita Oaks and winner of the Las Virgenes Stakes.

Larry Jones-trained Joyful Victory was bred in Canada by William D Graham out of the winning Wild Again mare Wild Lucy Black, a sister to Listed-placed Fine Impression from the family of US champion juvenile colt Roving Boy and Grade 1 Hempstead and Shuvee Handicap winner A Wild Ride.

Joyful Victory was sold for $60,000 to Michael Sucher as a short yearlingat the 2009 Keeneland January Sale and resold to her current owner Fox Hill Farm for $400,000 as a two-year-old at last year's Fasig-Tipton Calder sale.

Zazu, who carries the colours of Zenyatta's owners Jerry and Ann Moss, was bred by Summerhill Equine out of the winning Mr Greeley mare Rhumb Line, making her a half-sister to Cherry Hinton Stakes runner-up Art Princess.

Zazu was bought by Meadowlands Stud as a foal at the Fasig-Tipton November sale for $100,000 and resold to the Mosses for $285,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Tapit, a Wood Memorial Stakes-winning son of Pulpit, has sired five Grade 1 winners since his first juveniles hit the track in 2008 and all of them are female: Careless Jewel (Alabama Stakes), Laragh (Hollywood Starlet Stakes), Stardom Bound (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Del Mar Debutante, Las Virgenes, Oak Leaf Stakes and Santa Anita Oaks), Tell A Kelly (Del Mar Debutante) and Zazu (Las Virgenes).

Tapit's fee at Gainesway in Kentucky this year is $80,000.

Other sires double-handed in the Kentucky Oaks are Flower Alley (Bouquet Booth and Lilacs And Lace) and Include (Her Smile and St John's River).
