Wygods to disperse Californian stock

LEADING American breeders Marty and Pam Wygod, who have been staunch supporters of the Californian bloodstock industry forthe past 35 years, will disperse their Californian-based stock at the Barretts October Sale in Pomona, California.

The Wygods, who have bred Grade 1 winners such as After Market, Octave and Sweet Catomine, made the decision to disperse all their Californian broodmares, yearlings and weanlings in order to concentrate on their breeding operation in Kentucky.

During the past 35 years, the Wygods and farm manager Russell Drake developed their River Edge Farm into a leading operation, breeding 44 stakes winners. The 250-acre farm is likely to be sold.

One of the first stallions to stand at River's Edge was Pirate's Bounty, who topped the Californian sires' list three times and recently featured as the damsire of Belmont Stakes winner Da'Tara.

Today it is home to Bertrando, the sire of popular Kentucky sire Office, Benchmark, the sire of Santa Anita Dery winner Brother Derek, Tribal Rule and Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes hero Dixie Chatter, who was a new recruit for 2010. Each stallion will be transferred elsewhere for 2011.
