Spendthrift Farm snaps up Archarcharch

LAST month's Grade 1 Arkansas Derby winner Archarcharch will begin his stallion career at B. Wayne Hughes's Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky next year.

The Arch colt suffered a career-ending injury in the Kentucky Derby when he stumbled leaving the gate and had his saddle slip, eventually finishing 15th in the race.

He had beaten Kentucky Derby runner-up Nehro by a neck, giving 2lbs, in the Arkansas Derby, and had highly-touted dual Grade 2 winner The Factor back in seventh.

Earlier this year Archarcharch won the Grade 3  Southwest Stakes over 1m at Oaklawn, and ran third in the Grade 3 Rebel Stakes. Last year at two he broke his maiden in the Sugar Bowl Stakes at Fair Grounds.

Trained by William 'Jinks' Fires for Robert and Loval Yagos, Archarcharch retires with a record of three wins and two placings from seven starts and earnings of $832,744.

"We are delighted with the addition of Archarcharch to our stallion roster," said Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey.

"He is a big, grand-looking son of Arch from a great family, and it is particularly noteworthy that he broke his maiden at two sprinting and then went on to win the Arkansas Derby over 1m1f.

"He also gave every indication that he'd handle a Classic distance. We're glad to have him and we intend to support him strongly with our own broodmare band."

A $60,000 Keeneland September yearling, Archarcharch is out of the Grade 2-placed Woodman mare Woodman's Dancer, a daughter of Grade 1 Hollywood Oaks winner Pattern Step from the family of 1,000 Guineas runner-up Arch Swing.

A stud fee will be announced at a later date.
