WinStar secures Grade 1 winner Take Charge Indy

WINSTAR Farm has acquired the breeding rights to another of this season's leading American three-year-olds in Take Charge Indy, winner of the Grade 1 Florida Derby.

Earlier this year, the Kentucky nursery announced that they will also stand the Grade 1 Arakansas Derby winner and Classic-placed Bodemeister at the end of his career.

Take Charge Indy was a high-class juvenile, running third in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity and fourth in the Grade 1 Keeneland Breeders' Futurity for trainer Pat Byrne. The son of A P Indy defeated subsequent Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags when successful in the Florida Derby and consequently was a leading fancy for the Kentucky Derby. However, he sustained an ankle injury in that race which required surgery and 90 days of rest. He has recently resumed training with Byrne for a second-half of the year campaign.

"When I looked at him I saw A.P. Indy, who is obviously one of the greatest sires of sires in the industry today," said Elliott Walden, WinStar President & CEO. "Stallion credentials don't get much stronger than being a Grade 1 winner, by a multiple Grade 1 winner like A.P. Indy, and out of a multiple Grade 1 winner. We're excited about Take Charge Indy's chances of successfully carrying out the A.P. Indy line at stud."

The colt, owned by Chuck and Maribeth Sandford, is held in extremely high regard by Byrne, who has trained champions such as Favorite Trick and Awesome Again. He said: "Take Charge Indy is by far the best horse I've ever trained when you combine depth of pedigree and magnitude of talent. At the end of the day, I believe he will be the best horse I've ever had, period.

"He looks absolutely fantastic right now, and we're thrilled to have him back at the barn. Physically, he has filled out in all the right spots, and even Calvin (Borel) was amazed when he saw him. We're optimistic Take Charge Indy will have a strong end of the year."

Take Charge Indy is out of the top racemare Take Charge Lady. The daughter of Dehere was a triple Grade 1 winner and earned nearly $2.5 million.
