Mother Russia hands timely update to sister

L'Ormarins Queen's Plate (Grade 1), Kenilworth, 1m

MOTHER RUSSIA (m Windrush - Russian Muse by Russian Fox)

Breeder: Normandy Stud in South Africa

PUNTERS' choice Mother Russia denied Pocket Power a record-breaking fifth victory in this Group 1 event to run out a two-and-a-quarter length winner and provide a timely update for her yearling sister.

The five-year-old mare has been an excellent flag-bearer for her sire, Windrush, over the past two seasons with victories in three other Group 1 races besides the Queen's Plate. Windrush, a Grade 3-winning son of Seeking The Gold from the family of Metropolitan Handicap winner Divine Park, was imported from the US to stand at the late Graham Beck's Highlands Farm in the Western Cape, South Africa, in 2002.

Asides from Mother Russia, Windrush is also the sire of Group 3 winners A Daughter's Legacy, Diana's Choice, Promises To Keep, Rushing Wind and Sunsational.

Mother Russia is by far the best of four winners out of Russian Muse, a minor-winning daughter of Russian Fox (by Nijinsky). Russian Muse has also produced the Group 3-placed two-year-old Baltic Beauty to Windrush and the cross has been repeated again through her yearling, a filly who is catalogued as lot 184 in the upcoming Cape Premier Yearling Sale in Cape Town.
