Monarchos 'doing well' after colic surgery

MONARCHOS, winner of the Kentucky Derby ten years ago this week, has returned to Nuckols Farm in Kentucky after undergoing colic surgery on April 19.

Charles Nuckols III said: "His recovery from the surgery is right on course and, barring any unforeseen problems, he should be back to his old self in the very near future."

He added: "The outpouring of support and inquiries from breeders and fans has been phenomenal."

Monarchos ran the second fastest Kentucky Derby in history in1:59.97, joining Secretariat as the only winners to complete the 1m2f race in less than two minutes.

The son of Maria's Mon also won the Grade 1 Florida Derby and finished placed in the Wood Memorial and Belmont Stakes.

Monarchos retired to Claiborne Farm in Kentucky and moved to Charles Nuckols III's Nuckols Farm for the 2008 breeding season. His 2011 stud fee is$6,000.

He is sire of Madison Stakes, Humana Distaff and Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Informed Decision and last month's Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap winner Win Willy.
