First winner for globe-trotter Phoenix Reach

GROUP 1-winning globe-trotter Phoenix Reach was represented by his first winner on Sunday when Whiplash Willie made it third time lucky in the median auction maiden at Lingfield.

Out of the Listed-winning Nashwan mare Santa Isobel, Whiplash Willie races as a homebred for J. C. and S. R. Hitchins. He is trained by Andrew Balding, who also sent out Phoenix Reach to win five of 16 starts including the Canadian International, Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase and Sheema Classic. He also ran third to Brian Boru in the 2003 St Leger.

Whiplash Willie is one of 32 two-year-olds and 11 runners in Britain and Ireland from the stallion's first crop. The son of Alhaarth stood the past season at the National Stud in Newmarket for £2,500.
