Dalakhani colt takes Kenilworth to new level

WHAT A Picture may not have set the world alight when racing, but the daughter of Peintre Celebre has more than played her partin promoting Joerg and Diana Vasicek's Kenilworth House Stud.

At the Tattersalls December Foal Sale last year Willie Browne paid 85,000gns for What A Picture's colt foal by Marju, who later returned a good profit when selling for 170,000gns at Part 2 of the Tattersalls October Sale.

Progeny out of the mare again proved popular during the third session of this year's renewal of the Tattersalls Foal Sale with John Ferguson going to 170,000gns to secure the mare's third foal, a son of Dalakhani - a figure which also marked a personal best for Kenilworth.

"Our hopes rose yesterday afternoon and this morning when the 'big boys' and the vets were around him," said Vasicek, who purchased WhatA Picture for €200,000 through Francois Doumen at the 2002 Deauville August Yearling Sale.

"He was the right object at the right moment," he added, alluding to Dalakhani's popularity. "We hoped he would make 100,000gns and were really delighted when he made more. And we've just heard that he could go to Fabre later on which is excellent news."

Vasicek, who is originally from Switzerland, established the Clonmel-based Kenilworth House in1991 following a series of trips to Ireland with Diana.

"Diana and I went to Ireland to hunt when we were young," he said. "And on one of our trips we saw a delapidated farmhouse whick we liked.

"We bought it, put it into good shape and started selling store horses before going into mares."

What A Picture is one of five Flat mares owned by Vasicek but the 180-acre stud is also home to nine jumps mares including 1993 Irish Grand National heroine Ebony Jane and 2002 Champion Hurdle third Bilboa, whose Flemensfirth colt foal recently sold for €95,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland National Hunt Sale.

The Vasicek's also have several horses in training with Doumen including Bilboa's first foal, a filly by Definite Article named Bisoguet.
