Western Winter  extends excellent Dubai record

SILVER MIST, a seven-year-old gelding trained by Mike De Kock, won the Group 3 Al Rashidiya at Nad Al Sheba today. He just got the better of Third Set in a thrilling finish, with Kirklees running on well to finish third.

Western Winter, the sire of Silver Mist, is a three-time champion sire in South Africa who has been represented by 15 individual Group 1 winners to date. Thanks to the prowess of South African-trained horses at Nad Al Sheba, he has compiled an excellent record with his runners at Dubai.

His other progeny include Oracle West, winner of the 2006 Dubai City of Gold (Gr3), Surveyor, winner of the 2004 Jebel Hatta Stakes (Gr3), Yard-Arm, winner of the 2005 Al Fahidi Fort (Gr3), Imperial Ice, who captured the 2006 UAE Oaks (LR), and handicap winners Bad Girl Runs and Drift Ice.

A son of Gone West, Western Winter never won a stakes race but he did finish placed behind Langfuhr in two Grade 1 races, the Metropolitan Mile and the Carter Handicap, at the age of five.

He stood the 2008 breeding season at Lammerskraal Stud in South Africa, at a fee of R250,000 (£17,461 / €19,224).
