Wertheimers on five stakes winners in June
ONLY ten days into June the Wertheimer brothers were represented by their fifth individual homebred stakes winner of the month on Monday, when Slow Pace landed La Coupe at Longchamp.
The Wertheimers' quintet of stakes winners in June is completed by Intello (Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club), Pilote (Listed Prix Matchem), Anodin (Group 3 Prix Paul de Moussac) and Sarach (Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap).
Slow Pace, a five-year-old gelding trained by Freddy Head, won the Listed Prix de la Porte de Madrid in March and defeated Smoking Sun, a Niarchos family-owned and bred son of Smart Strike, to win La Coupe, a Group 3 contest over 1m2f, by a short neck.
Slow Pace is by Distorted Humor, a son of Forty Niner who stands at WinStar Farm in Kentucky and has been represented by 13 top-flight winners including Kentucky Derby hero Funny Cide, Breeders' Cup Classic scorer Drosselmeyer and Aesop's Fables, winner of the Prix Jean Prat.
The Wertheimers have enjoyed success with Distorted Humor before, breeding Grade 3 Northern Dancer Stakes winner Colizeo from him.
Slow Pace is out of the Listed-winning Seattle Slew mare Slow Down, making him a half-brother to Fastmambo (Kingmambo), a four-time winner over 1m-1m2f in France.
Slow Down, who has a two-year-old filly by Mount Nelson, is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner and Hollywood Gold Cup runner-up Olmodovar, while her dam Corrazona won the Grade 1 Beverly Hills Handicap and was a half-sister to Wood Memorial winner and Belmont Stakes runner-up Thirty Six Red.
