Casamento caps stellar year for Shamardal

Racing Post Trophy  (Group 1), Doncaster, 2yo, 1m

CASAMENTO (ch c Shamardal - Wedding Gift, by Always Fair)

Breeder: Dermot and Jack Cantillon, Kate and Courtney Canning in Ireland

CASAMENTO crowned a stellar sophomore season for his sire Shamardal by becoming his fourth Group 1 winner with a convincing victory in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

Shamardal got his stud career off to a flying start last year, becoming the leading first-season sire by prize-money, and he has gone from strength to strength in 2010, with Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club hero Lope De Vega becoming his first European top-flight winner and Captain Sonador and FaintPerfume enhancing his reputation by collecting Group 1 races in Australia.

Shamardal is the sire of 35 individual stakes performers, including 12 Group winners and nine Listed winners.

Bred in Ireland by Dermot andJack Cantillon, and Kate and Courtney Canning, Casamento is the eighth foal and fifth winner produced by the Listed-winning Always Fair mare Wedding Gift.

He is a half-brother to 7f-1m winners Brosna Cry, Sky Gift and Wana Doo, as well as Inler - who won a competitive conditions race on the same Racing Post Trophy card on Saturday.

The dam also has a yearling filly by Motivator and, after being barren to Shamardal, was sent back to Casamento’s sire this spring.

Casamento provides a timely advertisement for next month’s Goffs November foal sale: he was purchased by agent Bobby O’Ryan for €54,000 from the consignment of Dermot Cantillon’s Tinnakill House at the auction two years ago.

Racing Post Trophy runner-up Seville becomes yet another Classic hope for his sire Galileo, along with the likes of Frankel, Misty For Me and Roderic O’Connor.
