Grade 1 winner and sire Cryptoclearance dies

IN the same week that the deaths of El Prado and Summer Squall were announced, the US stallion ranks have lost another of their elder statesmen in Cryptoclearance.

The son of Fappiano died at Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Kentucky on Thursday after suffering a heart attack stemming from complications following colic surgery. He was 25.

Cryptoclearance had stood at Margaux Farm since 1996, when he was transferred from his first base at Vinery.

Steve Johnson, managing partner of Margaux Farm, said in a statement: "He was a breed-shaping horse, and his influence will be passed down over the yearsthrough not only his sons, but very significantly, through his daughters.

"His contribution to the breed is that of soundness, stamina and above all else heart – traits that he and his offspring have displayed in the races that define class in our breed."

"Scotty Schulhofer and Phil Teinowitz found Cryptoclearance in the 1985 Saratoga yearling sale and he remained wholly owned by Mr Teinowitz throughout his racing and breeding career.

"Named after the Naval Security department during World War 2, Phil had a very special relationship with Crypto during the 24 years he owned him, and he followed the success of all of Crypto's offspring as if they were his. "

Out of the Hoist The Flag mare Naval Orange, Cryptoclearance won four Grade 1 races – the Florida Derby and Pegasus Handicap at three and the Widener Handicap and Donn Handicap at five – as well as finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby, second in the Preakness Stakes and third in the Belmont Stakes.

Cryptoclearance sired three champions and 41 stakes winners. His best progeny includes surprise Breeders' Cup Classic scorer Volponi, 1998 Belmont Stakes hero Victory Gallop and Blue Grass Stakes winner Millennium Wind.

Another of his Grade 1 winners, Spinaway and Matron Stakes heroine Strategic Maneuver, went on to produce Grade 3 winner and sire Ishiguru, who was put down last week.

Cryptoclearance will be buried at Margaux Farm.
