LIFE OF VICTORY charged down the stretch under Rodrigo Blanco to win South America's equivalent of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Group 1 Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini.

The six-year-old entire closed gamely from off the pace and weaved his way through traffic in the 20-runner field before driving clear in the stretch to prevail by half a length at the wire over Sao Paulo´s Derby winner Negro da Gaita.

Fourth in last year´s race, the Carlos Daniel Etchechoury-trained winner covered the distance in 2min 23.52sec on firm ground for his second win at the highest level and tenth victory in 39 starts for owner Juan Garat´s Stud El Gusy.

He is a second winner of the Carlos Pellegrini for sire Incurable Optimist who standsat Haras El Paraiso. His first winner of the
race being Fire Wall who was from his first crop. Incurable Optimist is by Cure The Blues and out of the Seattle Slew mare, Miss Turlington.

Garat, whose City Banker was fifth behind his stablemate, said: "To win two Pellegrinis in four years is touching the sky. Personally I thought City Banker would place ahead of Life Of Victory, but experience is fundamental in races of this importance. Now we are going to work to win next year´s Nacional (Derby), which we were denied this year."

Louis Romanet, chairman of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, presented co-owner Santiago Martinez de Hoz with a silver trophy.
