Champion Azeri to sell at Keeneland November

US HORSE of the Year Azeri is scheduled to be offered at this year's Keeneland November Sale, which will run from November 10-22. It will mark the second appearance in the Keeneland sale ring this year for the daughter of Jade Hunter following the January Sale, at which she was bought back in foal to Ghostzapper by the Allen Paulson Living Trust for $4.4m.

Azeri has since foaled a filly, who will not be offered alongside her, and is in foal to Distorted Humor.

"The trust is under new direction and has a mandate to sell their horses," said Sikura, president of Hill 'n' Dale Farm, who is likely to consign Azeri as he did in January. "However, her Ghostzapper filly will be kept back to sell as a yearling as it is very hard for stock of her calibre to realise their full value as foals."

Azeri's first foal, a son of A P Indy, was a record buyback at last year's Keeneland September Sale when failing to sell at $7.7m. Seven months later, Michael Paulson sold the colt through Eddie Woods for $1.9m at the Keeneland April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale to Kaleem Shah. Now named Take Control, he is in training with Bob Baffert.

"The two-year-old sold for well above his reserve at Keeneland in April, which I think proves the trust's commitment to sell," says Sikura.

Azeri's yearling filly by Giant's Causeway is scheduled to sell as lot 81 during the first session of the Keeneland September Sale.

Azeri was an outstanding performer for the Paulson family, winning 17 of 24 starts including 11 Grade 1 races led by the Breeders' Cup Distaff. She retired as the winner of over $4m in earnings.
