Uruguay shuttling spell secured for Smarty Jones

SMARTY Jones, the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes wnner , will shuttle to Uruguay for the 2011 southern hemisphere season.

Having started his career at the Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky, the son of Elusive Quality was switched for the 2011 season to Ghost Ridge Farms in Pennsylvania, whose general manager Carl McEntee said: "With all the positive improvements Smarty Jones has made as a sire over the past year, the timing is perfect.”

Among the best performers from his first three crops is Grade 3 Keeneland turf winner Rogue Romance, who went on to finish third in last season's Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Smarty Jones will stand in Uruguay at the Haras Cuatro Piedras. Ricardo Colombo, who brokered the deal, said: "We could not be happier. Smarty Jones was an exceptional racehorse. Bringing him here will thrust the Uruguayan breeding programme into the international market.”
