$3.7m yearling impressive in debut

DUNKIRK, who topped the 2007 Keeneland September Sale when knocked down to Demi O'Byrne for $3.7m, landed his debut in convincing style at Gulfstream Park on Saturday for trainer Todd Pletcher, defeating 11 opponents in a $40,000 maiden special weight by five and three quarter lengths in the colours of John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.

Making his victory even more impressive was the fact that the grey son of Unbridled's Song was trapped mid-field for much of the race, which forced him to swing six wide around the home turn.

Bred in Kentucky by Will Farish, James Elkin and W. T. Webber, Dunkirk is the fourth foal out of the 2000 Kentucky Oaks and Mother Goose Stakes heroine Secret Status, also the dam of an unraced colt by Storm Cat, named Objectivity, who sold for $6.3m to John Ferguson at the 2005 Keeneland September.

Out of the Grade 1-placed Private Gift, Secret Status is a sister to the dual Grade 3 winner Alumni Hall, who is standing his second season at Norse Ridge Farm in Ontario, Canada.

The daughter of A P Indy is also a half-sister to Listed winner Private Gift and from the immediate family of Chilean champion three-year-old Maria Candela.

Secret Status has a two-year-old colt by Ghostzapper already named Grand Gift and a yearling colt by Dynaformer. She is due this season to Dunkirk's sire Unbridled's Song.
