Graded stakes winner
for Rockport Harbor
Santa Ysabel Stakes (Grade 3), Santa Anita, 1m 1/2f
MAY DAY ROSE (3 f Rockport Harbor - May Day Bluff by Pine Bluff) Breeder: Bridlewood Farm
EVERY young sire needs a flag-bearer and Rockport Harbor appears to have found one in Sunday's Santa Ysabel Stakes winner May Day Rose. Victory saw the three-year-old filly become the first Graded stakes winner for her second-crop sire, who stands at Darley at Jonabell in Kentucky for $12,500.
Granted, May Day Rose faced just two other rivals in the dirt test but she could not have recorded a more commanding victory, leading throughout to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths.
Rockport Harbor was one of the leading American two-year-olds of his generation, winning the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes and Grade 3 Nashua Stakes. Foot problems restricted his three-year-old career but he returned at four to take the Grade 3 Essex Handicap.
The son of Unbridled's Song has stood for Darley throughout his stud career to date, initially at a fee of $20,000. May Day Rose is one of 20 winners from his first crop, which numbers 118 foals.
Purchased for a sale-topping $220,000by Bob Baffert at last year's OBS June Two-year-olds in Training Sale in Florda, May Day Rose is a half-sister to minor stakes winner winner May Day Vow.
