Tullius scores in Sovereign for late Colori

Sovereign Stakes (Group 3, colts & geldings)
Salisbury 1m

Winner: Tullius

4yo ch g Le Vie Dei Colori - Whipped Queen (Kingmambo)

TULLIUS continued his progression from handicapper to stakes performer with a hard-fought victory over Sovereign Debt (Dark Angel) in the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes on Thursday.

The Andrew Balding-trained gelding began the season by winning the Suffolk Handicap at Newmarket and then landed two Listed contests before finishing a close third in the Group 2 Summer Mile last time out.

Tullius is the best performer by Racing Post Ratings to emerge from the three crops sired by Challenge Stakes winner Le Vie Dei Colori before the stallion's death after a paddock accident at Rathbarry Stud aged eight in 2008.

Le Vie Dei Colori, a son of Efisio, was also responsible for Horris Hill Stakes winner Carnaby Street, Prix la Rochette runner-up Mac Row and Spring Cup scorer Classic Colori.

Balding has another decent performer by the stallion in the shape of progressive handicapper Highland Colori.

Tullius was bred by Scuderia Archi Romani out of the winning Kingmambo mare Whipped Queen, a half-sister to Prix Jean Prat third Monsagem. He is a half-brother to dual winner Poster.

David Redvers paid just 20,000gns to secure Tullius from the draft of Trickledown Bloodstock when the horse went through the ring at Book 2 of the 2009 Tattersalls October yearling sale.
