Trenchant takes Dovecote thriller

Report: Kempton, Saturday Dovecote Novices' Hurdle (Grade 2) 4yo+

THE four-year-old Trenchant reinforced sire Medicean's good record with the few progeny of his who have gone jumping when beating the older horses in a thrilling three-way finish in the Dovecote Novices' Hurdle at Kempton.

Medicean's has had a nine winners this season from 18 runners. They have won 13 races from 172 starts, a 14 per cent strike rate.  Beau Michel is his highest RPR runner on 148.

Trained by Alan King, Trenchant had had been in action eight days previously, finishing three and three-quarter lengths behind leading Triumph Hurdle hope Torphichen at Sandown. Trenchant's victory on Saturday gave the form of that race a massive boost.

He was bred by Cheveley Park Stud and was bought by Highflyer Bloodstock  at the Tattersalls October Horses in Training Sale last October for 32,000gns.

He is a half-brother to Cesarae, winner of the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot in 2007 and fourth in the Lockinge and Queen Anne Stakes last summer, to Group 3 winner Nowhere To Exit, who finished second in Montjeu's Prix du Jockey Club, and to Listed winner Embraced.

Personal Column, a five-year-old gelding by Pursuit Of Love, is his only other sibling to go jumping - he won the Grade 3 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Punchestown last year.

Their dam is the Listed-class performer Tromond (Lomond) who is a half-sister to Ribblesdale Stakes winner Mont Etoile.

Thornton said after the race: "When he won originally I thought he was a Fred Winter horse, but winning that has buggered that, so I expect he'llgo to the Triumph."
