Track record holder Najran put down

NAJRAN, sire of last year's dual Grade 2 winner Wasted Tears, was put down on February 9 at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington due to injuries sustained in a paddock accident at Hopewell Farm.

The 12-year-old son of Runaway Groom was days away from being shipped to anew base, Red River Farms in Louisiana. He had stood his first seven years at Hopewell Farm in Kentucky, latterly at a fee of $7,500.

A multiple stakes winner, Najran equalled the North American track record for a mile in 2003 when taking the Grade 3 Westchester Handicap.

From four crops aged three and over, he is the sire of six stakes winners including other Grade 2 scorers Muny and Sky Cape.
