DERBY runner-up and Dante Stakes winner Tartan Bearer is set to join the roster at the Jockey Club of Turkey after selling at the Tattersalls December Sale on Thursday for 50,000gns to Turkish agent Omer Halim Aydin.

The Ballymacoll-bred son of Spectrum, who is a brotherto Golan, was originally scheduled to stand this season in Libya but never made the trip after political unrest broke out earlier this year. Instead, he spent the summer in Ireland and was sold yesterday by Oak Lodge Stud.

"I'm amazed that such a high-class horse was here and selling for that price," said Aydin. "I had no plans to buy him - I just walked into the ring and bought him on spec. He'll stand next season in Turkey for a partnership of mine at the JockeyClub.

"It's a pity a horse like this was here. I've been in the business for 45 years and I'm sure the commercial side of the business is damaging the thoroughbred horse. In Turkey, people still like middle-distance runners and want to breed racehorses."

Prix de l'Abbaye winner Total Gallery is also set for a trip abroad after selling out of Henry Candy's yard for 32,000gns to Ian Deane, acting on behalf of Badal Stud Farm in India.

The son of Namid, who won at Moulins for Mikel Delzangles and Qatar Bloodstock earlier this year, will stand in India alongside Sussex, an unraced son of Oh So Sharp.

"He is a lovely horse from a good family," said Deane. "He'll probably be the quickest stallion to stand in India."

Former Mickley Stud resident Needwood Blade was a late withdrawal after selling earlier in the day to a private breeder in Egypt.
