First winner for Westerner

BRILLIANT stayer Westerner sired his first winner on Sunday when Times Square won a 1m colts newcomers race by a short head at La Teste Buch.

Trained by his part breeder and owner Michel Roussel, Times Square is the second foal and winner out of the placed Septieme Ciel mare Sainte Parfaite. The colt's further family includes Montjeu and Again.

Westerner was a top-class stayer for the Wildenstein family, winning five Group 1 races including the Ascot Gold Cup. The son of Danehill was also versatile enough to run second in the 2005 Arc to Hurricane Run.

Westerner stands under the Coolmore jumps banner at Castle Hyde Stud in Ireland for €6,000. Times Square is the second runner in France by the stallion, who has been represented by three runners in Britain and Ireland including the placed filly Elizabelle.
