Roc De Cambes returns home for stud duty

ROC DE CAMBES, trained by Noriyuki Hori to finish third in the 2007 Japanese St Leger, is to return to his birthplace, The Oaks Stud in New Zealand, to begin his stallion career in the forthcoming southern-hemisphere breeding season.

The five-year-old son of Red Ransom was bred and raised at the stud and was sold to prominent Japanese owner-breeder Katsumi Yoshida at the 2006 Sydney Easter yearling sale for A$130,000.

Roc De Cambes won his first four starts including a Grade 2 race over 1m3f for three-year-olds, before finishing third in the Japanese St Legerand fourth in the Grade 1 Arima Kinen.

He is out of the Irish-bred Fairy King mare Fairy Lights, a granddaughter of Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Gaily, who is also ancestress of Pilsudski.

The Oaks Stud manager RickWilliams said: "I'd followed Roc de Cambes' career with great interest and when Mr Yoshida made us the offer to stand him we gratefully accepted.

"As a sire prospect he appeals as a horse capable of leaving early maturing stayers that can target the Oaks and Derbys and then progress to the cups as older horses."

Roc De Cambes will commence stud duties at a fee of NZ$7,000 (£3,407, €3,991).

He joins on The Oaks Stud roster Sakhee's Secret, Europe's champion sprinter of 2007 who shuttles from Whitsbury Manor Studin Hampshire for the second year. His fee remains at NZ$15,000.

Bachelor Duke, who usually shuttles from Ballylinch Stud in County Kilkenny but didn't make the return trip to the County Kilkenny operation this year, will stand at NZ$12,000, up from NZ$8,000 last year, when he was New Zealand's leading first-season sire.

Former Coolmore inmate Spartacus has had his 2010 fee set at NZ$5,000; Stravinsky stallion Keeninsky will stand at NZ$4,000; and The Oaks Stud's flagship stallion Darci Brahma will cover for NZ$20,000.
