'Textbook' mating for Zenyatta and Bernardini

REIGNING US horse of the year Zenyatta was successfully covered by Bernardini at Darley's base in Lexington, Kentucky, on Wednesday morning.

Zenyatta made the short journey from Lane's End Farm, where she is boarded on behalf of her owner-breeders Jerry and Ann Moss.

Zenyatta was an honourable head second to Blame in the Breeder's Cup Classic in November, bringing to an end an unbeaten streak of 19 races.

A. P. Indy stallion Bernardini, whose first crop last year included Group 1 winners A Z Warrior and Biondetti, was chosen for the popular mare's first mating.

On her fansite, Zenyatta's blog reads:  "We got rave reviews! It all went very well. In horse terms, it was 'one jump and a very good cover' - meaning thateverything went perfectly in our first meeting.

"[According to the stud staff] it was 'textbook. Zenyatta was unbelievably professional, especially for a maiden mare. It was all nice and easy and went perfectly'."
