Median soars 17 per cent at Tattersalls December

A LOW-budget breeding stock section finished both Tattersalls' December Sale and the company's 245th year in business on Thursday evening after a fortnight that surprised many with its performance.

Last week's yearling sale was an uninspiring event, illustrating theoften limited demand from those looking for racing's end product, before a largely Irish band of pinhookers provided the basis for a much stronger foal market. But the mares' section climaxed on Tuesday with the most electric day's trading seen at a European sale this year.

Thursday's final entire breeding-stock day turnover would not have bought Tuesday's 1.3 million gns sale-topper Diary and it took just 35,000gns to head the day's business when Trickledown Stud's Paul Thorman bought four-year-old Phoenix Rising, a maiden daughter of 1989 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Dead Certain sold in foal to Compton Place.

"My wife Sara broke in Dead Certain so it's a family we've known for a long time," said Thorman, after outbidding Whitsbury Manor Stud owner Chris Harper. "She's for Trickledown and if the foal is nice enough we'll hope to sell it in our draft next year. We got 46,000gns and 58,000gns for Compton Place foals last week and he's a sire that's always been good to me."

Despite a catalogue seemingly light on obvious stars, an internationally diverse group of buyers helped the breeding stock section turn over 34,544,800gns, up four per cent on last year, the 53,641gns average rose by one per cent and the 17,000gns median shot up by 17 per cent. The clearance rate fell from 79 per cent to 73 per cent.
