COMPETITION between those buying to race and purchasing for resale remained strong in today's penultimate session of the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale, in which a son of Kayf Tara topped the day's trade at €50,000.

Aiden Murphy, one of those buying for racing interests, eventually came out on top for the session topper following a protracted battle with John Dineen who was looking to secure the grandson of Sadler's Wells for Eugene McDermott's Kennycourt Stud.

The Goldford Stud offering is out of a four-times winning daughter of Grand Lodge whose siblings include the crack chaser Celibate and the Triumph Hurdle runner-up Balla Solla.

"He's been bought for Graham Roach who likes to buy a few quality stores every year to add to his string," commented Murphy. "Obviously he'll be kept to race and he'll be going back to England."

Earlier Murphy had come up just short in his quest to secure a Kayf Tara from Mill House Stud who was knocked down to Fiona Magee at €48,000. The colt is an own-brother to a yearling whom Murphy purchased here on Monday for €46,000 and is out of a winning half-sister to the Persian War Novices Hurdle winner Chamapgne Harry.

"He's a very nice sort from a good family and hopefully he'll be back here for theDerby Sale in a few years' time," reported Ms. Magee.

At this sale last year the last-named paid €41,000 for a Goldneyev foal out of J'Y Reste and 12 months later Cleaboy Stud and Coppice Farm presented a filly by the late Heron Island out of the mare and she was purchased by Richard Cotter on behalf of his brother Kieran for €45,000.

The filly is a half-sister to Willie Mullins's Grade 1-winning chaser J'Y Vole."She's a lovely, well-bred filly from a proper Grade 1 family," reported Cotter. "She's been bought to race."

Although he missed out on the session-topper, Eugene McDermott, through John Dineen, struck for a €44,000 colt by that sire who also hailed from the Cleaboy draft. He is out of a Listed-placed own-sister to the smart chaser Helltornic.

On Wednesday the former Kennycourt graduate Menorah made a bright start over hurdles at Warwick while several hours later McDermott's colours were carried to victory by Miracle Steps who trounced her rivals in a Dundalk handicap.

Dineen said: "He's a good, athletic colt by a sire who is very hot at the moment. He's from a good family and let's hope that he'll be back here for a Derby Sale."

A busy Chris Newport headed his spending with a €42,000 son of Flemensfirth from Yellowford Farm whose dam is a half-sister to Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner Back In Front.

"I've bought him for an English client who I have bought for in the past and he will almost certainly be kept to race," remarked Newport. "He's a good, athletic colt from a good family and we were very pleased to be able to buy him."

Newport also signed for a €24,000 Flemensfirth relation to Jair Du Cochet, while he later gave €36,000 for a Westerner half-brother to Mouse Morris's 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero War Of Attrition.

Mark Pitman continued to make his presence felt and this time he came to the fore with the €38,000 purchase of a fine son of Milan from Springfield House Stud.

"He's a quality sort and, to be honest, I thought that he was very good value," observed Pitman. "He's a good individual from the immediate family of a high-class and very current chaser [Cooldine]."

Later on Norman Williamson's Oak Tree Farm signed for a €34,000 Kayf Tara colt out of a Grade 3-placed mare while Amy Murphy, acting for Wychnor Park Stud, gave €32,000 for a Kalanisi filly out of an own-sister to the Gold Cup winner Kicking King.
