Gold buys Ektihaam sister for 200,000gns

TATTERSALLS' most-successful December Foal Sale since the 2007 pre-recession renewal finished in Newmarket on Saturday with a day where the foresighted racing and breeding buyers dominated top-end trade.

John Ferguson, buying for Sheikh Mohammed, was the day's most prolific buyer with his haul headed by a 220,000gns colt from Teofilo's third crop consigned from Victor Stud and out of a half-sister to IrishOaks winner Shawanda.

Angus Gold, who on Friday paid 450,000gns for a Sea The Stars filly who topped the sale, was back buying for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and spent 200,000gns on a full-sister to the owner's exciting juvenile Ektihaam.

"We still think her full-brother is very good," said Gold. "He was disappointing in the Dewhurst but he is a big horse and it just came too soon for him. I'd be disappointed if the brother doesn't go on next year, he's always shown a lot of ability at home.

"This was a mid-April filly and I'm sure she'll improve. The mare is still quite young and her Oasis Dream three-year-old was a beautiful yearling so we know she breeds nice horses."

A daughter of Dansili out of an unraced full-sister to Breeders' Cup Mile winner Domedriver and offered from Dominic Burke's Whitley Stud realised 180,000gns by the time James Wigan of London Thoroughbred Services saw off Liam Norris for the filly.

"It's a difficult family to get into and she has been bought for a client to race although I can't say who," said Wigan.

A year after her Multiplex foal was sold for 130,000gns, the nine-year-old mare Shemriyna - dam of Prix Eugene Adam Shimraan - was responsible for a 165,000gns Champs Elysees filly sold for Richard Kent and Allan Stennett's Allseasons Bloodstock from Mickley Stud. Cathy Grassick, seated withowner Yvonne Jacques, saw off Liam Norris for the filly.

Turnover at this year's December foal sale approached the
24 million gns mark, 6.5 million gns up on 12 months ago and the highest amount in every year bar the glory days of 2006 and 2007.
