Across-the-board declines at Karaka sale

THE New Zealand Select Sale held at Karaka could not match  even the returns the sale achieved in 2007 with the aggregate, average and median all below figures registered two years ago.

Compared to 2008, the aggregate fell by 41 per cent from NZ$28,839,500 (£10,277,679/E11,394,980) to NZ$17,039,000 (£6,070,072 / E6,743,933), with the median and average dropping by 37 per cent.

New Zealand Bloodstock's managing director Petrea Vela said: "Although there's been good activity in the ring over the past three days, and the general consensus has been that it's hard to buy a nice horse, this sale has suffered from a lack of buyer confidence to buy on spec in this climate.

"This session has traditionally been underpinned by pinhookers selecting horses for our Ready to Run Sale in November and while the top horses have sold just as well, without the pinhookers here in force, we've seen a softening of that middle market."

The best was saved for the last session when a Tale Of The Cat colt fetched NZ$205,000 (£72,975 / €80,922). Consigned by Hallmark Stud the colt, who is out of the Redoute's Choice mare Eyes Light Up, was bought by Perth trainer Lindsey Smith.

However, his price is lower than the highest prices recorded in both 2007 and 2008 - NZ$230,000 and NZ$300,000.

The leading buyer at the sale was Paul Moroney Bloodstock who purchased a total of 21 yearlings for an aggregate of NZ$1,182,000 (£420,000 / €465,000).

The leading vendor by aggregate was Windsor Park Stud, which sold 39 yearlings for NZ$1,528,500 (£544,007 / E603,700), and by average was Wellfield Lodge - the stud's eight yearlings sold averaged NZ$79,000 (£28,000 /€31,000)

Leading sire by average was Tale Of The Cat - his four yearlings sold averaged NZ$118,000 (£41,000 / €46,000) - just ahead of Coolmore's shuttle stallion Oratorio - his three sold for an average of NZ$78,333 (£27,854 /€30,981).

The son of Danehill also topped the leading first-season sires table ahead of Storming Home and Stratum.
