Grade 1 winner for super sophomore War Front

WAR FRONT has been one of the big success stories among the current second-season US sires: his first crop has yielded this year's Group 2-winning three-year-olds Soldat and The Factor, and on Saturday he was represented by his first Grade 1 winner when daughter Summer Soiree landed the Del Mar Oaks.

Summer Soiree, representing the same connections as this year's Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, trainer Graham Motion and owner Team Valor, raced handily and kicked on 4f from home in the 1m1f Del Mar Oaks on firm turf, opening up a lead and holding on gamely to hold off runner-up Star Billing (Dynaformer) by half a length on the line.

Three-year-old Summer Soiree was bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones and his son, Bret, out of the winning Mazel Trick mare Mazel Tov, a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Mil Kilates from the family of Grade 1 Go For Wand Stakes second Forcing Bid.

She was not soldat $70,000 as a foal at Keeneland November and not sold again for $72,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July yearling sale. Team Valor purchased her privately from the Joneses this spring.

War Front, a son of Danzig who is one of four Graded stakes winners produced by Grade 1 Gazelle Handicap runner-up Starry Dreamer, won the Grade 2 Alfred G Vanderbilt Breeders' Cup Handicap over 6f and was second in the Grade 1 Forego and Vosburgh Stakes.

He stands at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky at a fee of $15,000.
