Strong hand for freshmen in Coventry

FRANKEL may be the star attraction on day one of Royal Ascot on Tuesday, but the breeding world will also have an eye on the produce of first-season sires going for black type in the Coventry Stakes and Windsor Castle Stakes for two-year-olds.

The Coventry looks to be particularly informative about this year's freshman sire crop as they are responsible for all of the three market leaders: Dawn Approach (by New Approach), Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz) and Cristoforo Colombo (Henrythenavigator).

A duel between Dawn Approach and Cristoforo Colombo would evoke memories of those fought out by their sires in their own racing careers.

Perhaps it is a good omen for Cristoforo Colombo that the score between Henrythenavigator and New Approach was 2-1, with the former beating the latter into second in both the Newmarket and Curragh 2,000 Guineas.

Henrythenavigator finished third behind New Approach in the Futurity Stakes at two.
