Strong first day at Melbourne Premier Sale

THE Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands started with a strong opening session on Monday, with the aggregate up A$2 million on last year.

A total of A$9,007,500 (£5,004,167/€5,654,708) was traded during the first day of the four day sale, with the average of A$71,488 (£39,716/€44,879) representing a 30 per cent rise on the opening session lastyear. The median of A$60,000 (£33,333/€37,667) was a 33 per cent gain on 2009.

Buyers from Japan, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Africa were among the successful bidders.

The top lotwas a grey colt by Exceed And Excel who was sold for A$300,000 (£166,667/€188,333) to Mick Price and Blue Sky Thoroughbreds. Consigned by Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, the colt is the first foal out of the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner De Lago Mist from the family of Wanted and Blue Sky's Group 3-winning two-year-old Shrapnel.

McDonald Racing went to A$200,000 (£111,111/€125,556) for Burnewang North Pastoral's Stratum filly from Spinning World's Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes-winning daughter Coupe.

Top buyers on the opening day were Denise Martin with five lots at A$585,000, Guy Mulcaster Bloodstock (three lots for A$330,000); Robbie Griffiths (five lots for A$350,000) and Ricky Yiu (three lots for A$330,000).

Peter Heagney, Inglis bloodstock director, said: "The day one clearance of 74.12% has been comparable to the sales conducted so far this year. The rise in average is exceptional but there is still a lot of selling ahead of us."
