Track record for Strait Of Dover in Queen's Plate
Report: Canada, Sunday
Woodbine: Queen's Plate (Grade 1) 1m2f, AW, 3yo (Can-bred)
CANADA'S senior Classic was lit up by a track record performance on Sunday as Strait Of Dover (Danny Vella/Justin Stein) went wire-to-wire in the $1 million Queen's Plate.
The 3.8-1 second favourite scored by a length and a quarter over Woodbine Oaks winner Irish Mission, with another filly Dixie Strike nearly four lengths further back in third. The final time was 2m01.99s, beating the old Polytrack record by 0.19sec.
On a speed-favouring track, Strait Of Dover set solid enough fractions (23.85s, 47.74s, 1m12.31s) before completing a four-timer.
"I loved this horse all along," said winning jockey Stein. "He's shown me and I have said it time and time again that he is a racehorse. He wants to get out here and he wants to win.
"I didn't have to be on the lead with him today but no one else wanted to go and we were going pretty easy so I just let him roll on up there. I have faith in this horse and he just galloped around there like a champ."
The son of English Channel is now likely to run in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on dirt at Fort Erie on July 15.
