GOLD SHIP (3 c Stay Gold - Point Flag by Mejiro McQueen)

Bred by Eiichi Kobayashi in Japan

PROGENY of Stay Gold dominated the prestigious Arima Kinen at Nakayama on Sunday as three-year-old Gold Ship swept from last to first to record a highly impressive success over Ocean Blue.

The pair are by Big Red Farm's Stay Gold, a leading stallion in Japan who is best known as the sire of the brilliant Orfevre. Remarkably, Gold Ship is the third Arima Kinen winner by Stay Gold within the past four years following Orfevre (2011) and Dream Journey (2009).

Settled at the rear of the field by Hiroyuki Uchida, Gold Ship was pulled wide around the final turn and swept down the outside of the entire field to win going away at the 17/10 favourite. His victory concludes a highly productive season, during which he was also successful in the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas) and Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) for trainer Naosuke Sugai.

A son of legendary Japanese stallion Sunday Silence, Stay Gold was a Grade 2 winner in his native Japan and became a top international performer, landing the Dubai Sheema Classic and Hong Kong Vase in 2001. He was also third in the 1998 renewal of the Arima Kinen.

In addition to Orfevre and Gold Ship, he is also the sire of Nakayama Festa, who ran a head second to Workforce in the 2010 Arc.

Stay Gold, who is now rising 19, stands at Big Red Farm alongside I'll Have Another and Conduit.

Gold Ship is bred on the same cross as the brothers Orfevre and Dream Journey, being out of a mare by multiple Group 1 winner and JRA Hall of Famer Mejiro McQueen.

He was bred by his owner Eiichi Kobayashi out of the Listed-placed Point Flag. She has a yearling brother to Gold Ship.
