ALREADY a dual Group 1 winner in his native Australia, Starspangledbanner enhanced his breeding appeal even further in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, by making most of the running on the stands-side rail to hold off an international field.

The southern-hemispherethree-year-old may have also significantly increased his chances of shuttling from Australia to stand in Ireland next year.

Starspangledbanner's victory was the culmination of a plan hatched in January, when Coolmore purchased the colt for a reported A$10m (£5,880,000, €7,044,000).

The operation brought him to Europe to be trained by Aidan O'Brien for a crack at Europe's top sprints, in preparation for the start of his stud career at Coolmore's Australian base at Jerry's Plains in New South Wales later this year.

Success at Royal Ascot was written in Starspangledbanner's pedigree: his sire, Choisir, sparked the influx of Australian sprinters to the royal meeting with a memorable double in the King's Stand and Golden Jubilee Stakes in 2003.

Indeed, Starspangledbanner evoked memories of his sire, also a muscular chestnut, by blazing a trail and burning off his rivals.

He is also from the family of Haradasun, another Australian Group 1 winner who Coolmore brought to Ireland to be trained at Ballydoyle, and won the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Starspangledbanner is expected to head back to Australia to begin his stallion career after a tilt at the July Cup.

His stud fee at Coolmore Australia, where he will stand alongside his sire (who also supplied Wokingham Handicap winner Laddies Poker Two), has already been set at A$33,000 (£20,090, €23,090).
