Bloomsbury Stud welcomes first 2010 foals
THE Dowager Duchess of Bedford's Bloomsbury Stud in Bedfordshire welcomed its first foals of the new year on Tuesday when Zola, a winner of the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes at Ellerslie in New Zealand, produced a bay filly by Starcraft.
A 15-year-old daughter of Green Desert stallion Volksraad, Zola was purchased from the Bloomsbury Stud New Zealand dispersal in May 2007 by Paul Makin, to mate her with his dual-hemisphere Group 1 winner Starcraft.
Zola delivered the colt by Starcraft in Australia last year and was then put back in foal to the stallion on northern hemisphere time and sent to the Tattersalls December Sale.
Her purchaser, Scott Springett, sent her to Bloomsbury Stud to foal and plans to repatriate her in the summer.
Bloombsury Stud's other new arrival was a bay colt by Beat Hollow produced by Lord Cadogan's Generous mare Free Offer.
This year marks the first foaling season at Bloomsbury with Philip Redhead at the helm as stud groom. Redhead has been second man at the stud for 22 years and took over the role of stud groom upon the retirement of Peter Diamond.
Redhead is only the fourth stud groom at Bloomsbury in the last 30 years.
