Stakes success for young French sire Literato

ALTERITE handed her sire, Literato, a notable first on Monday when justifying favouritism to take the Listed Prix Des Fourrages Thierry Dutertre at Craon.

Jean-Claude Rouget's filly ran out an impressive winner under Christophe Soumillon, drawing away to win by four lengths from Sir Mark Prescott's raider Oasis Cannes to become the first stakes winner for her sire.

Literato has just 34 first-crop two-year-olds to represent him this season but has made a fine start as the sire of three winners from eight runners.

The son of Kendor won eight of 11 starts for Jean-Claude Rouget including a pair of Listed races as a two-year-old and the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at three. That victory set him up for a crack at the Champion Stakes and the grey obliged by a head under Christophe Lemaire with a host of Group 1 winners in behind.

Sold to Godolphin following that success, Literato failed to fire in two further outings and was retired to his birthplace Haras de la Reboursiere et de Montaigu, where he replaced his late sire Kendor.

He stood the past season for €4,000.

A homebred for Ecurie La Vallee Martigny Earl, Alterite is the first foal out of the unraced Ana Luna and from the further family of the high-class French middle-distance filly Celimene. She is also the first European stakes winner to be produced by a daughter of the French and Irish Derby hero Dream Well.
