Third Post Trophy winner for Montjeu

ST NICHOLAS ABBEY propelled himself to the head of ante-post betting lists for next year's Classics by showing a scintillating turn of foot to win today's Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt became the third son of Coolmore stallion Montjeu – who has had only six crops of racing age – to land the Group 1 race. Ominously, his predecessors were Motivator and Authorized, who both went on to capture the Derby in the following season.

The form of this year's Racing Post Trophy looks strong, with Acomb Stakes hero Elusive Pimpernel following the winner home at a respectful distance to finish runner-up, and Al Zir, an expensive Godolphin-owned son of Medaglia D'Oro who had won his two previous starts by an aggregate nine lengths, in third.

Montjeu looks a worthy successor to his sire Sadler's Wells as the Derby sire par excellence. His first crop contained the Epsom Derby one-two Motivator and Walk In The Park as well as Irish Derby hero Hurricane Run, and theyhave been followed by another Epsom Derby winner in Authorized and two more Irish Derby scorers in Frozen Fire and Fame And Glory.

Montjeu stands at a private fee at Coolmore in Ireland.

St Nicholas Abbey was bred by Barton Bloodstock and Villiers Syndicate in Ireland out of the 19-year-old Sure Blade mare Leaping Water, an unraced half-sister to another Racing Post Trophy winner for Ballydoyle, Our Aristotle, as well as other Group 1 winners Starborough and Ballingarry.

Demi O'Byrne paid 200,000gns for the colt, who is now unbeaten in three runs including the Group 2 Beresford Stakes, at Book 1 of last year's Tattersalls October yearling sale.
