Soviet Song in Kentucky to change breeding luck

MULTIPLE Group 1 winner Soviet Song, whose broodmare career has been blighted by problems conceiving, will be covered in America this year in an attempt to change her luck.

The daughter of Marju, who won five Group 1 races for her owner-breeders Elite Racing Club, has produced only one foal since retiring from racing at the end of 2006.

In 2007 Soviet Song failed to get in foal to Galileo, as was the case with Oasis Dream in 2010 and last year. Her mating with Raven’s Pass in 2009 resulted in an early abortion.

This year she is set to visit Speightstown, best known in Europe for Prix Jean Prat winner Lord Shanakill and last year’s Norfolk Stakes scorer Bapak Chinta, at Winstar Farm in Kentucky.

“Speightstown is a proven winner-getting stallion,” said Matthew Budden, racing manager of the Elite Racing Club. “He has aprofile of having winners in both Europe and America.”

Budden is confident that a trip to America will pay dividends. “She has clearly had issues conceiving,” he said.  “We felt that coming to America would help get to the bottom of the problem.

“The American vets have made a positive breakthrough and have pinpointed persistent infection as the source of the problem and that has nowcleared up,” added Budden.

The Elite Racing Club-owned Sistine, a winner at Southwell on Tuesday, will be visiting last year’s Derby winner Pour Moi at Coolmore. A resultant foal would be closely related to exciting three-year-old prospect Camelot, as Sistine is a three-parts sister to the Racing Post Trophy winner’s dam.

Ffestiniog, who has produced three black-type winners including Eisteddfod, will be visiting Darley's Dalham Hall resident Exceed And Excel in the coming weeks. The club also had its first foal of 2012 earlier in the month, when Affinity, a half-sister to Soviet Song, produced a filly by Marju.
