Golden Slipper Stakes (Group 1), Clairwood, 2yo, 7 1/2 f

MAHBOOBA (f Galileo - Sogha by Red Ransom)

Breeder: Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum (AUS)

GALILEO'S influence extended to South Africa on Saturday when the Australian-bred Mahbooba easily won the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Clairwood in the colours of her breeder. Prior to Saturday's victory, the filly had run third in the Group 1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship.

Galileo: looks to have a new star in South African filly Mahbooba

Galileo is best known for his success with middle-distance three-year-olds but the Mike de Kock-trained Mahbooba is the stallion's third juvenile Group 1 winner following New Approach and Teofilo. She is also his second southern hemisphere-bred Group 1 winner after Sousa.

Mahbooba is the first foal out of Sogha, a winning three-parts sister to French Group 3 winner Slew The Red. As her second dam, Marple, is a daughter of Diesis, Mahbooba represents another example of Galileo working with Doubly Sure blood. Doubly Sure - who struck prominence as the dam of Kris, Diesis and Keen - also features in the background of other high-class runners by Galileo such as Cape Blanco, Sixties Icon, Galactic Star, Gallant Tess and Lush Lashes.

Sogha has a yearling filly by Fusaichi Pegasus. She has since been exported to Argentina.
