Cherokee Run filly cruises to Listed success

Monday; Saint-Cloud; Prix La Camargo (Listed) 1m

SONEVA (3 f Cherokee Run - Lakabi by Nureyev)

SONEVA cruised home to take this Listed feature by two lengths.

The daughter of Cherokee Run leapt to prominence last season when taking the Group 3 Prix d'Aumale at Chantilly, in which she became the second stakes winner out of Lakabi following the smart US sprinter Coronado Rose (Coronado's Quest).

Lakabi was unplaced on her only start for John Gosden, but she has goneon to produce five winners from as many runners including the Mikael Magnusson-trained Throne Of Power (Pulpit). The daughter of Nureyev has a yearling filly by Mr Greeley.

Lakabi's dam, Lakab, took the Listed Felcourt Stakes at Lingfield in 1993 but her influence has since been felt worldwide as the dam of two stakes performers in Australia - Roanoke and Nureyev's Girl - and US Listed winner European Rose.

In addition, her 2005 colt, Moynahan, contested last season's 2,000 Guineas for Paul Cole.

Further back, this is the family of the high-class miler Wixim and Grade 3 winner Run Softly, later a sire in the US.

Cherokee Run is not so well known in Europe but he consistently sires useful dirt performers in the US, where he stands for $25,000 at Darley at Jonabell.

From ten crops of racing age, the Breeders' Cup Sprint winner has sired the Grade 1 winners War Pass, who enters stud at Lane's End Farm this year, Chilukki and Yonaguska, who stands in Louisiana.

The son of Runaway Groom is also responsible for the high-class performers Chelokee, Sir Cherokee, Zanjero, During and Kafwain, all of whom stand in Kentucky. The latter is the sire of The Pamplemousse, who launched his bid for the Triple Crown with dominant displays in this spring's Sham Stakes and San Rafael Stakes.
