Son of Shamardal close to Australian stud deal

A DEAL IS close that would  secure a Group 1-winning Australian-bred son of Shamardal for stud duties.

Owner Greg Wagner is set to sell a 50 per cent stake in Captain Sonador, winner of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, to a Queensland stud, according to racingandsports.com.au.

"The stud people are coming to have a look over him and if the deal goes through, he'll have his final run in the Stradbroke (at Eagle Farm racecourse in June). I'd love to take him back to Melbourne for the Spring (carnival), but he's not going there unless the stud deal falls over for some reason," said trainer Roger Milne.

Captain Sonador is scheduled to run next in the Gold Coast Stakes over six-furlongs on March 19.

An Aus$30,000 yearling at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast sale, Captain Sonador has won six races, most recently a Listed contest  in January.

Meanwhile, the Magic Millions Tasmania Sale saw 99 yearlings sold for $1,243,250 (£769,447/€909,57 ), down 16.6 per cent on last year's 105 sold for $1,490,250. The average of $12,558 was down 11.5% on last year's $14,193 and the clearance rate was 64% compared to 70%.

Magic Millions acting managing director David Chester said: "It was a real buyer's marke. The clearance rate was obviously disappointing, but this sale traditionally is a tough selling market."
