What A Friend shines for stalwart sire Alflora

WHAT A FRIEND confirmed himself the latest star sired by mainstay British-based jumps stallion Alflora when showing plenty of resolve to win the Grade 1 LexusChase at Leopardstown on Tuesday.

The Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old stuck on bravely in the closing stages of the race to hold off a strong late challenge from the Nicky Richards-trained Money Trix (by Old Vic) with Joncol (Bob'sReturn) back in third.

What A Friend was bred in Britain by Olivia Bush out of the New Member mare Friendly Lady, who was purchased privately for just £580.

Friendly Lady, who also produced the winning pointers Good Lord and Lord Fitzroy, died in 2006.

Alflora, a triple Group 2-winning son of Niniski, has been in the vanguard of British-based jumps sires for several years having supplied the likes of Amaretto Rose, Central House, Farmer Jack and Hand Inn Hand.

He stands at Shade Oak Stud in Shropshire for a fee of £3,000.

Also on Tuesday, Solwhit, a French-bred five-year-old son of German Group 1 winner Solon who was purchased by Peak Bloodstock to be trained in Ireland, won his fourth Grade 1 of the year in the Leopardstown Golf Centre December Festival Hurdle.

At Newbury Reve De Sivola became the second young hurdler trained by Nick Williams to win a Grade 1, when landing the Racing UK Free Today Sky 432 Challow Novices' Hurdle.

Reve De Sivola is by French National Stud-based Assessor, a Richard Hannon-trained winner of the Prix du Cadran. Like Alflora, Assessor is by Niniski. His best representative over jumps to date is the versatile My Way De Solzen.

Like Me Voici, whom Williams saddled to win the Coral Future Champions Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow on Monday, Reve De Sivola was purchased as a yearling at Arqana.
