Zanzibari to stand at Haras du Mesnil

THE FRENCH stallion ranks have gained their first son of twice champion US sire Smart Strike, with the retirement of Zanzibari to the Haras du Mesnil near Le Mans.

Trained by Andre Fabre, Zanzibari was one of the best early juveniles in France last season.

After breaking his maiden on his debut in the May when carrying his breeder Elisabeth Fabre'ssilks, he was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed and won the Prix de Cabourg and then finished last of five - but beaten only a length - in a strong Prix Morny, behind Arcano, Special Duty and Canford Cliffs.

A leg fracture after the Morny ended his racing career.

Zanzibari is out of Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner Zinziberine, herself out of a winning half-sister to dual Prix Royal-Oak winner Amilynx.

His introductory fee at Mesnil has been set at €1,000.
