Smaller Barretts January Sale sees a rise in median
THE Barretts January Mixed Sale in Pomona, California on Monday was not a vintage renewal but a 13 per cent rise in median to $3,600 gave officials at least some cause for optimism.
Barrettes were forced to reduce the sale by a day to a single session this year after receiving far fewer entries than normal. Consequently, the aggregate plunged by 45 per cent to $2,225,900. However, the average only fell minimally by three per cent to $6,101.
Sweetpea, a four-year-old daughter of Stravinsky, and an unnamed two-year-old filly by Orientate jointly topped the session when selling for $50,000.
Mark Tatch purchased Sweetpea, who ran third in a maiden special weight at Santa Anita earlier this month. The three-year-old is out of the dual-winning Mt Livermore mare Angel Kate and is a half-sister to stakes winner Just For Keeps.
The Orientate two-year-old was purchased by Kjell Qvale. Out of the winning Carson City mare Miss City Princess, she is a half-sister to stakes winner Miss Bridget Jones and from the family of Kentucky Derby winner Spend A Buck.
