Silvano colts in demand at South African sale

COLTS by Silvano, sire of Dubai World Cup candidate Bold Silvano, accounted for the top two prices paid in the second session of the Equimark Vintage yearling sale in Durbanville, South Africa, on Sunday.

Ze Kaiser, out of Palace Bride and a half-brother to Group 3 Al Rashidiya winner Silver Mist, became the sale's overall top lot when purchased by trainer Mike Bass for owners Marsh Shirtliff, Markus Jooste and Bryn Ressell for R700 000 (£62,600, €72,800).

Bass said: "He is a nice horse with lovely substance to him and the pedigree gives you confidence. I bought him for Marsh Shirtliff and two or three others."

Earlier in the day Hassen Adams paid R300 000 (£26,800, €31,200) for another Silvano - Silver Bluff, a colt out of a winning half-sister to Group 1 Canon Gold Cup winner Major Bluff consigned by Drakenstein. Adams said: "He's a nice sort and he will go to [trainer] Greg Ennion, who is mad about him."

This year's Equimark Vintage Sale finished with an average of R49,563 (£4,430, €5,154) for 214 horses sold, which is 43 per cent down on last years figure of R86,426.
