Sweet success for Candy Ride at Santa Anita

LANE'S END Farm stallion Candy Ride was the star of the show at Santa Anita on Sunday, providing a pair of high-profile winners with Twirling Candy capturing the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes and Sidney's Candy scoring in the Grade 3 Sir Beaufort Stakes.

Both winners were bred by Candy Ride's owners, the late Sidney Craig - best known in Britain for campaigning 1992 Derby hero Dr Devious - and his wife Jenny. Both horses are owned by the Craig Family Trust and trained by John Sadler.

Three-year-old colt Twirling Candy - who got up by a nose to defeat Smiling Tiger in the 7f Malibu - is the first foal to race out of the Chester House mare House Of Danzing.

House Of Danzing is out of a half-sister to another star Craig-owned son of Candy Ride in Chocolate Candy, winner of the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby at three and third in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at two.

Sidney's Candy, meanwhile, is out of the Storm Cat mare Fair Exchange, the sole offspring of Matriarch Stakes heroine Exchange.

Candy Ride has enjoyed a standout year, especially at California tracks. Sidney's Candy also won the Santa Anita Derby, while Misremembered landed the Santa Anita Handicap and El Brujo took the Grade 1 Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar.

Candy Ride - a son of Ride The Rails - will command a fee of $40,000 at Lane's End in 2011.
