Shamardal gets Listed winner at the Curragh

SHAMARDAL became the latest first-season sire to break his northern hemisphere stakes race duck when Arctic won the Listed Grangecon Stud Stakes at the Curragh today.

He cost trainer Tracey Collins just 9,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling sale and is now unbeaten in two starts.

He was bred by Darley out of Shawanni, who finished fifth in the Fillies' Mile and sixth in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches for Godolphin. She is also the dam of Queen's Vase winner Shanty Star and the Listed winner Hinton Admiral.

Arctic's second dam is the 1,000 Guineas third Negligent, the dam of Songlark and Blatant.

Winning trainer Tracey Collins said enthusiastically: "Arctic was really impressive. We thought he was smart from day one and has always been a natural athlete.

"He learnt a lot on his debut and he looksto be very smart."

Shamardal, a four-time Group 1 winner and a champion at two and three, is a son of Giant's Causeway. He has had five winners in Europe so far this season.

He stood his first season in Australia and from that first crop has had two runners placed at Group 2 level. He has had 12 winners in the southern hemisphere and is joint second in the Australian leading first-season sires' list by number of winners.

Cashmans were impressed with the winner and gave him an introductory quote of 33-1 for next year's 2,000 Guineas.
