Australia: O'Reilly
filly makes history

Randwick: A J C Australian Derby (Group 1), 1m4f

SHAMROCKER (f O'Reilly - Bohemian Blues by Blues Traveller)

SHAMROCKER proved her Australian Guineas victory in March was no fluke on Saturday as she became the first horse ever to pull off the Australian Guineas - Derby double.

Settled near the rear by Glen Boss, the filly made a sustained run to overhaul Retrieve (by Rahy) and win by a length-and-a-quarter. Anacheeva, by the late French shuttle sire Anabaa, took third.

Shamrocker is one of nine Group 1 winners by BMW Horse of the Year and champion sprinter miler O'Reilly, who stands at Waikato Stud in New Zealand. The son of Last Tycoon was crowned the New Zealand champion sire of 2007-08 and as such, commands a fee of NZ$50,000 - the second highest in New Zealand behind Zabeel.

Among his other Group 1 winners are champion Alamosa and the top-class Hong Kong runner Fellowship.

A NZ$65,000 yearling purchase by trainer Danny O'Brien, Shamrocker is out of Bohemian Blues, a daughter of 150/1 1993 Epsom Derby third and former Tally-Ho Stud resident Blues Traveller. The multiple-winning mare is a half-sister to Singapore Group 3 winner Fairy Tale.
