Shadwell takes over Fillies' Mile sponsorship

HAMDAN Al Maktoum's breeding operation Shadwell has taken over sponsorship of the Fillies' Mile. The race had been backed by Meon Valley Stud since 1998.

The Group 1 race for juvenile fillies is staged for the first time this year at Newmarket, having been moved from Ascot as part of Racing For Change's plans to hold a British champions' day at the Berkshire track.

The race will be held on Friday, September 23, as part of 'Shadwell Day', which also features the upgraded Group 2 Joel Stakes. The day after, Newmarket stages the Cambridgeshire, Sun Chariot Stakes, Cheveley Park Stakes and Royal Lodge Stakes.

Sheikh Hamdan has a strong connection with the Fillies' Mile. Height Of Fashion, who was bought by the sheikh and produced Nashwan and Nayef for him, won the race in 1981, while Aqaarid carried his silks to victory in the 1994 renewal.

Shadwell Stud director Richard Lancaster said: "We are delighted to have this opportunity of continuing our association with Newmarket Racecourses and to be offered the chance to sponsor such a prestigious race.

"The changes to the autumn programme with the Middle Park Stakes moving to Future Champions Day and the Fillies' Mile switching to Newmarket has given us this wonderful opportunity.

"We are very pleased and feel it is totally appropriate to be sponsoring such a race as the Shadwell Fillies' Mile. It is a race of huge significance in the development of high-class fillies and we are very happy to be associated with it.

"I firmly believe that the Shadwell Day offers a wonderful day's racing and demonstrates our industry at its best. It is worth noting that among the supporting races that the Nayef Joel Stakes has been upgraded to Group 2 status for 2011."
